According to scientists from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, July 2023 was 0.24 degrees Celsius (°C) hotter than any other recorded July by NASA, and it was 1.18°C warmer than the July average between 1951 and 1980.

“NASA’s data confirms what billions of people around the world literally felt: the temperatures in July 2023 made it the hottest month ever recorded. […] The science is clear. We must take action now to protect our communities and the planet; it’s the only one we have,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

It’s worth noting that this record is part of a warming trend; according to NASA data, the five hottest Julys since 1880 have occurred in the past five years.
